Abstract

Translating lyrics for musicals presents unique challenges due to the need to ensure high translation quality while adhering to singability requirements such as length and rhyme. Existing song translation approaches often prioritize these singability constraints at the expense of translation quality, which is crucial for musicals. This paper aims to enhance translation quality while maintaining key singability features. Our method consists of three main components. First, we create a dataset to train reward models for the automatic evaluation of translation quality. Second, to enhance both singability and translation quality, we implement a two-stage training process with filtering techniques. Finally, we introduce an inference-time optimization framework for translating entire songs. Extensive experiments, including both automatic and human evaluations, demonstrate significant improvements over baseline methods and validate the effectiveness of each component in our approach.

Method

To translate a paragraph of English musical lyrics into Chinese lyrics that both retain the original narrative role and are comfortable for singing, we focus on two kinds of constraints: translation quality and singability.

For translation quality, we seek to ensure that the translated lyrics are fluent, faithful to the original lyrics, and have literal beauty. For singability, we aim to ensure that the translated lyrics can be sung out naturally, which includes constraints on the length of the lyrics and the rhyme pattern. The following figure shows the constraints we consider in our work, with examples demonstrating their importance.

Our method consists of three key components: reward models trained to evaluate the quality of the translated language, a translation model trained using a two-stage pipeline which can generate sentence-level translations that are of high quality and satisfy singability constraints, and an inference-time optimization framework that composes sentence-level results into paragraph-level output. The following figure illustrates how these components work together.

Results

We conduct extensive experiments including both automatic and human evaluations, where the results showcase the effectiveness of our method and demonstrate significant improvements over the baseline method. Here we provide more demos along with their audios.

Song English Lyrics Translated Chinese Lyrics

The Impossible Dream

-- Man of La Mancha

To dream the impossible dream,

To fight the unbeatable foe,

To bear with unbearable sorrow,

To run where the brave dare not go

追求不可能的梦想

挑战不可战胜之敌

承受那难以承受之痛

勇闯无人敢去之地

Your Will Be Found

-- Dear Evan Hansen

So let the sun come streaming in

Cause you'll reach up and you'll rise again

Lift your head and look around

You will be found

就让阳光洒满房间

因为你会奋起再登攀

抬起头四处看看

必被发现

Man of La Mancha

-- Man of La Mancha

I am I, Don Quixote, the Lord of La Mancha

My destiny calls and I go

And the wild winds of fortune, will carry me onward

Oh whithersoever they blow

Whithersoever they blow, onward to glory I go

我是我,堂吉诃德,拉曼查的领主

宿命呼唤,我随之去

命运的狂风,将我带向未知旅途

任凭风儿吹向何处

任凭风向何处吹,我直奔荣耀而去

Comparison with Baseline

Song English Lyrics Ours Baseline

Sixteen Going on Seventeen

-- Sound of the Music

You are sixteen going on seventeen

Baby, it's time to think

Better beware, be canny and careful

Baby, you're on the brink

你十六岁快要十七

兄弟们排成排

年少轻狂的无赖痞子

会为你提供美食

你是十六个十七岁

伙伴们会结队

渴望年少顽童和部队

献给你餐酒一杯

The Phantom of the Opera

-- The Phantom of the Opera

Sing once again with me

Our strange duet

My power over you

Grows stronger yet

和我再一起唱

怪异对唱

我对你的控制

越来越强

再和我一起唱

陌生的重唱

我对你的力量

更加茁壮

Me and the Sky

--Come From Away

Suddenly I'm flying company charters

Suddenly everything's high

Suddenly there's nothing in between me and the sky!

突然间我正坐着包机飞往

突然一切都高涨

突然之间我和天空之间无屏障

突然我起飞公司的航程表

都突然变得很高

突然间我和天空之间一片飘渺
